The Difference Between BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dermal Fillers

BOTOX® Cosmetic and Hyaluronic Acid dermal fillers are complementary treatments. One does not replace the other.

Static vs. Dynamic

BOTOX® Cosmetic is indicated for the treatment of dynamic wrinkles (expression lines). It is aimed at smoothing away lines of expression that are caused by actions such as frowning, smiling, laughing, and squinting. Contrarily, wrinkles, lines, folds or creases (not caused by repeated expression) can be corrected with injections of dermal filler.

BOTOX® Cosmetic is not effective in treating static wrinkles; wrinkles that appear when your face is at rest. Static lines are not caused by repeated expression and are best treated by injections of dermal fillers.

Cause & Symptoms

BOTOX® Cosmetic treats the cause of dynamic wrinkles as it works on the muscles that produce the appearance of expression lines.

Dermal fillers address the symptoms of static wrinkles which appear as folds, creases, and moderate-to-deep lines as they “fill in” these lines.

Duration

As a general rule, a BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment lasts between 4-5 months. After several treatments repeated at recommended intervals, the effects of the treatment tend to last longer.

Generally, the results achieved with dermal fillers last between 8-12 months. At times they last even longer.

Time, Treatment & Recovery

The BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment is quick and does not necessitate any downtime or recovery time. The duration of the treatment itself is between 10 and 20 minutes depending on the quantity of BOTOX® Cosmetic injected.

Dermal filler treatments on the other hand could require a minimal amount of recovery time. Some patients may experience slight bruising, redness, sensitivity in the area injected, or slight discomfort. These possible side effects generally last less than a week. A dermal filler treatment could last between 20 and 60 minutes, again, depending on the amount of filler the physician is injecting.

Factors Influencing Your Satisfaction

Factors Influencing Your SatisfactionCosmetic dermatologists, such as Dr. Manish Khanna, who have a wealth of experience and the necessary skills to perform such injections understand the capabilities and limitations of BOTOX® Cosmetic, thereby significantly increasing the success of their patients’ treatments.

An excessive dose – if the dose of BOTOX® Cosmetic is too high, it could cause an expressionless face, a somewhat disfigured face, and intense headache or the inability to control certain facial muscles temporarily.

An insufficient dose – if the dose of BOTOX® Cosmetic is too low to relax the muscles in the treatment area and the results will be minimal.

The injection sites – if BOTOX® Cosmetic is not injected into the correct muscle, the treatment could be inefficient or provoke an involuntary weakening of certain muscles. This could result in undesirable results or the lack of results.

The dilution – BOTOX® Cosmetic is prepared by diluting the product in a physiologic liquid therefore it could be more or less diluted. The more diluted the solution, the softer the effect of BOTOX® Cosmetic. BOTOX® Cosmetic that is over-diluted is similar to an insufficient dose.

Interval between treatments – a BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment will generally last between 4 and 6 months. It is recommended that one’s next injection be carried out before one regains the ability to contract the muscles causing the dynamic wrinkles. After repeated treatments, the frequency of visits will most likely diminish.

Patients’ expectations – it is important for the physician to have a clear understanding of the results the patient wishes and expects to achieve following the treatment. Similarly it is necessary for the physician to clearly explain what can be achieved with BOTOX® Cosmetic.

Follow-up with the physician – a follow-up consultation is important so that before-and-after photos can be taken, the results can be evaluated, and if necessary a small touch up can be carried out by the physician.

BOTOX® Cosmetic for Men

A key sign of aging in men is the development of lines and wrinkles that appear due to repeated facial expressions such as smiling, laughing and frowning.

The most popular physician-administered, non-invasive treatment, for men and women, to address the signs of aging from expression lines or ‘dynamic wrinkles’ is BOTOX® Cosmetic.

Why Men Choose to Have Treatments of BOTOX® Cosmetic

Botox for MenMore men are becoming concerned with skin aging. They are more conscious of the need to look rested, refreshed and youthful. The prevailing notion that men with wrinkles are considered more masculine or distinguished is slowly losing popularity.

BOTOX® Cosmetic injections have been very successful with men as they address the concerns that men often have when they look at themselves in the mirror. They feel energetic, invigorated and confident but their appearance does not necessarily reflect how they feel.

Moderate to severe glabellar lines (the lines between the eyebrows) and the lines that run horizontally on the forehead give the impression that the person is worried or even angry. The lines around the outer eyes (crow’s feet) give the impression that a person is ‘a certain age.’

Tiny injections of BOTOX® Cosmetic 2-3 times a year not only prevent further deepening of lines, but soften the lines that already exist resulting in a refreshed appearance.

What Are the More Common Areas Men Seek to Treat?

The Glabella – the lines between the eyebrows appear over time due to repeated frowning.

The Crow’s Feet – the lines that radiate outward from the outer corner of the eye appear due to repeated actions such as smiling, laughing or squinting.

Horizontal Forehead Lines – the lines that appear over time due to repeated actions such as raising one’s eyebrows or normal animation while talking.

Are BOTOX® Cosmetic Treatments the Same For Men and Women?

Men respond just as well to BOTOX® Cosmetic as women, but to achieve desired results they generally need a higher dose. The reason men require more units of BOTOX® Cosmetic than women is due to the fact that they have a greater muscle mass than women. Since BOTOX® Cosmetic works as a muscle relaxant, larger/stronger muscles means the required dose will be greater.

Description of a BOTOX® Cosmetic Treatment Session With Dr. Khanna

Below is a step-by-step description of what your BOTOX® Cosmetic session will be like.

Although it seems routine, the treatment is highly personalized for each patient and the importance of a trained, skilled, experienced physician who understands the functions of the FACE and NECK muscles cannot be underestimated.

1. Before and after photos – It is necessary to take photos of the areas to be treated prior to the treatment in order to evaluate the success of the treatment and to detect asymmetry, if any, present before the injection.

2. Consent – the consent form for the BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment is explained and any questions you may have are answered prior to the injection.

3. Examination – Dr. Khanna will determine where to administer the injections after having examined your ability to move certain muscles in the treatment area. You will be asked, therefore, to contract and relax your muscles in the area to be treated.

4. Fine needle – Dr. Khanna will use a very tiny needle to inject the medicament directly into the muscles. He will administer a number of small injections of BOTOX ® Cosmetic directly into the muscles that cause the dynamic wrinkles.

5. Anesthetic – There is no need for a topical anesthetic cream. However, Dr. Khanna may decide to apply one if you are concerned about your comfort during the session.

6. Discomfort – if any, discomfort is generally minimal and dissipates quickly. The injection itself is usually described as a little insect bite; the feeling lasts a few seconds.

7. Post-care – for 4 hours following the treatment you may not lie down. Also, avoid yoga, facials, saunas, strenuous exercise and manipulating the treated areas for the rest of the day following your treatment.

8. Contract – Dr. Khanna will inform you that you should contract the muscles in the treated area a number of times throughout the following hours in order to increase the diffusion of the medicament.

9. Follow-up appointment – the treatment is complete after you have had a follow-up with Dr. Khanna approximately 2-3 weeks following the treatment. At times a tiny ‘touch-up’ injection may be carried out in order to perfect the result.

In order to maintain optimal results, Dr. Khanna will recommend your next BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment within 4-6 months.

Understanding Pricing

Understanding Pricing of BotoxBOTOX® Cosmetic is a technique-sensitive procedure. This means that the skill and experience of the physician will impact the outcome of the treatment.

When you consider pricing of a BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment, you must consider that you are paying for a product, as well as the knowledge, skill and the actual act of an expert physician injecting the BOTOX® Cosmetic.

AREA – the cost of a BOTOX® Cosmetic injection will depend on the area being injected. Certain areas have larger muscles and require a higher dose than others. Further, the cost will depend on the number of areas being treated.

UNITS – the cost of a BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment will also depend on the number of units that the physician will inject into a certain area. The number of units necessary for a positive result varies from person to person due to the fact that everyone’s muscles contract differently. Muscles vary in strength and size.

FREQUENCY OF TREATMENTS – You should expect to have treatments spaced 4 months apart when you first begin BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments although some people may be space out treatments at 5 or 6 month intervals if they notice their result have not diminished. If you maintain your treatments at the recommended intervals, you will find that over time the interval between treatments will increase.

BOTOX® Cosmetic Myths & Facts

Myths about BotoxMyth 1
BOTOX® Cosmetic injections cause a person to become expressionless and artificial-looking.

FACT – The truth is that a BOTOX® Cosmetic injection is a highly technique-sensitive procedure. Achieving your desired result, to look natural and refreshed, depends on the skill and experience of the physician and very importantly, both the amount and precise location of the medicament injected.

Myth 2
BOTOX® Cosmetic is poisonous and unsafe.

FACT – BOTOX® Cosmetic has been approved for medical use in Canada and in more than 75 countries for 20 different applications. In 2001, Health Canada approved BOTOX® Cosmetic for wrinkle therapy and it has been proven to be extremely safe through extensive research and testing.

Myth 3
BOTOX® Cosmetic injections are painful.

FACT – An injection of BOTOX® Cosmetic is a highly technique-sensitive procedure. Although only well-trained, experienced cosmetic physicians should be trusted and sought out by those interested in having a treatment, it is simple and quick. A small quantity of liquid is injected using a very tiny needle so that the discomfort, if any, is minimal. The majority of first-time patients say that the treatment was much easier than they had imagined.

Myth 4
BOTOX® Cosmetic is available in the form of a cream.

FACT – Creams are available under different names such as Argireline, Argirelina, Botox-like, Dermo-relax, Injection-free and so on. The fact is that the biological action of the creams is similar to that of BOTOX® Cosmetic but in a much smaller intensity and it purely works on the surface of the skin. It does not substitute BOTOX® Cosmetic which works below the surface of the skin to relax the muscles that cause lines and wrinkles to form.

Myth 5
BOTOX® Cosmetic injections are expensive.

FACT – BOTOX® Cosmetic treats the underlying cause of wrinkles, therefore each patient needs to be treated according to their facial muscles. You should not be surprised that the cost of your treatment is different from your best friend’s; this means that your physician is providing you with a personalized treatment and an adequate dose so that you can achieve optimal results.

The region you are treating also has an influence on the cost of the treatment. Since we are treating the muscles, the dose will differ according to what region and how many regions the physician is treating.

The frequency of treatments generally has a positive effect on the long-term cost of treatments. We advise that patients respect the recommended intervals during the 1st year as this will maintain their results and allow them to reduce the number of treatments in following years.

Finally, if we compare the annual cost of BOTOX® Cosmetic to that of cosmetic creams, the investment is similar. The average Canadian spends between $70-$130 monthly on various types of creams. The annual cost is therefore approximately $800-$1500. This investment is similar to what a patient can expect to invest annually for treatments of BOTOX® Cosmetic. You may also think of it as a daily investment of $2-$6.
